What Comes Next?
The Philosopher Practioner
I’m Walter Lis—a 57-year-old who’s spent 35 years navigating diverse careers: from electrician to corporate consultant across sports technology, financial services, healthcare, education, and beyond. I’ve worked in construction, climbed corporate ladders, built digital platforms, and helped companies transform their operations.
At 22, I developed the Six Caissons framework—Integrity, Humility, Balance, Passion, Perspective, and Discipline. For three decades, these principles have guided every major decision I’ve made. At 54, I had what I call “The Great Paradigm Shift”—realizing I was never less than, despite decades of feeling behind.
Now I’m building The Third Half Project to help people navigate life’s second act: career transitions, AI disruption, and the fundamental question of what comes next when the traditional path diverges.
I’m not here to coach you or promise transformation. I’m here to share frameworks developed through lived experience and invite you into the exploration.
Six Principles. Three Decades. One Framework.
The Six Caissons aren’t abstract philosophy—they’re practical tools I’ve used to navigate every major life decision since age 22. A caisson is a foundation structure that goes deep to support what’s built above. These six principles work the same way.
Integrity
Alignment between your values and your actions. Not moral perfection—honest reckoning with who you are and what you stand for.
Humility
Knowing what you don’t know. Being open to growth. Recognizing you’re not less than others, but you’re also not done learning.
Balance
The art of integration, not compartmentalization. Work, relationships, health, growth—all parts of one life, not competing priorities.
Passion
Energy directed toward what genuinely matters to you, not what you think should matter. Sustainable fuel, not temporary motivation.
Perspective
The ability to zoom out, see the bigger picture, and recognize that today’s crisis is tomorrow’s footnote. The long view.
Discipline
Showing up consistently, especially when you don’t feel like it. The difference between wanting and doing.
What Comes Next? Let's Find Out Together.
The Third Half Project is my platform for exploring life’s second act—the years between 50 and 80 when traditional career paths diverge, AI disrupts industries, and the question shifts from “How do I climb?” to “What matters now?”
This isn’t a coaching program. It’s a learning journey I’m documenting in public. Through weekly essays, podcast conversations, and framework development, I’m sharing what I’m discovering about:
- Career transitions and reinvention in the AI era
- The inner work that enables external change
- Building sustainable work that serves you into your 70s and 80s
- Turning accumulated wisdom into your next chapter
If you’re facing your own “what comes next” moment—whether it’s career displacement, retirement planning, professional pivoting, or simply wondering what the second half holds—you’re exactly who I’m writing for.
What You’ll Find:
- Weekly Essays on Substack exploring career, philosophy, and second-half navigation
- The Podcast featuring conversations with people navigating their own transitions
- Assessment Tools to help you evaluate where you stand and where you’re headed
- Frameworks developed through lived experience, not theory
